Firmware updates for Scrypt mining hardware arrive frequently โ€” manufacturer releases, community patches, and pool-specific optimisations. Applying the wrong version can brick a unit or silently reduce hashrate. Here is our bench protocol for evaluating updates before fleet-wide deployment.

Read the Release Notes Carefully

Manufacturer notes often mention supported hardware revisions. An L7 firmware compiled for a specific hashboard revision will fail on incompatible boards. Match your unit’s serial prefix against the supported list before proceeding.

Never Update a Production Fleet First

Our standard procedure: apply the candidate firmware to one unit, run a full 24-hour bench cycle, compare hashrate variance and rejection rates against the previous firmware baseline, then wait an additional 48 hours for stability confirmation. Only after that do we recommend fleet rollout.

Keep a Rollback Path

Before updating, photograph current firmware version, download the previous stable image to local storage, and confirm your unit supports USB or SD recovery. We have seen operators lose days of uptime because they updated without a rollback image available.

Custom Firmware Risks

Community-developed firmware occasionally achieves lower W/MH or higher peak hashrate. It also voids warranty and may disable safety throttling that prevents hardware damage during cooling failures. We document but do not recommend custom firmware unless the operator accepts full hardware loss risk.

When Stock Firmware Is Fine

If your unit holds stable hashrate within 5% of specification over 24 hours on stock firmware, an update rarely provides meaningful benefit. The operational risk outweighs marginal gains. Focus instead on cooling and pool connection quality โ€” those factors affect more farms than firmware version.
